SOLAS Safety of Life at Sea - Mandatory Verification Containers Weight
The International Convention for Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), has established a set of obligations regarding the weighing and check of the gross weight of each consolidated container to be transported by sea. These measures aim to prevent accidents resulting from the concealment of the actual weight of the container.
The new legislation resulting from the SOLAS Convention enters into force on July 1, 2016 and requires that all containers are weighed.
The weighing, registration and identification of the gross weight of the container it’s the responsibility of the container loader.
If the new obligations are not met, the consolidated container cannot board.
What are the new obligations?
- Identification of the person responsible for obtaining the gross weight of each container,
- Obtaining the gross weight of each container by using defined methods,
- Use of weighing instruments that meet the metrological verification standards,

What are the methods that can be used to obtain the gross weight of the container?
- Method - 1 - consists of weighing the consolidated and sealed container, by using a weighing instrument that meets the standards of metrological verification.
- Method - 2 - It consists on weighing, using a weighing instrument that meets the metrological standards, each volume or cargo items introduced into the container and add the tare weight obtained of the container.
